Plant Distribution

Covid-19 has exacerbated every issue facing our world, including food insecurity and access to fresh healthy food. Local food retailers have largely had to move online, and SNAP benefits don’t do much to help undocumented families and neighbors who have been rapidly laid off. In order to help combat these widening inequities SPROUT is offering no-cost plant distribution during the pandemic. We are currently only able to deliver to Orleans Parish.

The idea is simple:

  • You want to learn to garden or keep gardening

    • As farmers markets have closed and grocery stores can feel stressful many people have turned to vegetable gardening. We couldn’t be happier and want to encourage this trend to increase food security in our neighborhoods. That’s why we’re working with amazing partners (Grow Dat, River Queen Greens, Abundance Farms, Too Tall Farms and countless more) to provide these plants directly to you.

  • We’re working together in solidarity, not charity.

    • SPROUT is distributing a free resource, but the idea isn’t charity. We’re in this together. As a farming and gardening organization we know that when people can’t grow food we all lose something. If you have something you’d like to pitch in, a suggestion, or if you want to get involved get in touch! As the summer months approach and the plants start maturing make sure to safely share the bounty with your neighbors.

  • Let’s grow a local food system together.

    • It’s that simple. Fill out the form, pick-up your plants at Press Street Gardens or have them delivered if you are immunocompromised or quarantined, treat them with care (we’re here to help digitally!) and watch our people-power grow. We ask that recipients of plants practice solidarity with their neighbors. If times are tough the skill of gardening helps us turn earth’s energy into sustenance and that’s a skill to share.

UPDATE on SPROUT’s seedling distribution program:

6/16 - Due to a lack of availability at local nurseries, we are temporarily unable to take orders for seedlings. Our plant and seed distribution programs will restart soon so please keep your eyes peeled!

Additional Information for Plant Delivery

  • If you have questions about how much of each plant you can fit in your space, or if you have received your plants and have questions about how to successfully grow them, please feel free to reach out to gabe@sproutnola.org.

  • Because this is a decentralized operation with many different people and groups volunteering their time, we are unable to guarantee specific varieties of plants.

  • Deliveries will be dropped off outside of the address you requested; recipients are not always notified, so keep an eye out on your front porch after you make a request!

  • This is an effort made to provide relief to those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we do not expect any payment. If you feel in a position to be able to donate, you can donate here but definitely don't feel any pressure. Thank you SO much and we're really glad that you're jumping in to grow food for your family and neighbors!
