About Us
Mission
We support established and developing small-scale and sustainable farmers, community gardeners, and farm workers in Louisiana with technical and social support to build a stronger, more equipped community of growers in Louisiana and help all New Orleanians be part of a community food system.
Vision
SPROUT envisions a community food system rooted in equity. We work alongside community members to build lasting relationships and increase access to jobs, food, and land. By acknowledging the policies and practices that have explicitly harmed and prevented people of color from benefiting from the food system, we can collectively act and advocate for new ways of growing, buying, and selling, while restoring our relationships with the land and each other.
Values
Community: We center people and community in our activities.
Relationships: We are kind, responsive, and accountable to our community, neighbors, and team.
Racial Equity: We work to change systems that have limited people of color’s access to jobs, food, and land.
Environment: We take sustainable action with respect to our region’s climate and delicate ecosystems. All of our work is informed by the Climate Crisis.
Power-Shifting: We commit to working with and as historically excluded populations to build power and platforms. This means shifting power to Black people, Louisiana’s Indigenous communities, LGBTQIA+ people, people of color, and women.
Intentionality: We make small-scale changes with purpose and tenacity to create systems-level change.
Education: We adapt and learn from history and each other to create a shared community food system.
diversity & inclusivity
We see our work as our collective liberation. As a diverse coalition of gardeners and farmers, we know that our freedom is intertwined. We are not allies; we are comrades. Together, we prioritize shifting power to farmers and growers who are Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, people of color, and women.
